“Quiet on the Set! Roll Sound!”

Unlocking the Secrets of Recording Great Production Audio

Presented by Andrew Raut, CD for Introduction to Postproduction and Alex Ginzo, CD for Introduction to Film and Video

Do you struggle with recording poor sounding audio that in the end “kills” your project? It’s ugly business, isn’t it? There are many areas of film sound we could cover, but the one recurring issue is how to properly record our actors to deliver great-sounding dialog.

In this installment of the DC Buzz, we are going to share our hard-won wisdom and insight into recording actors on-location. We’ll share how we deal with the challenges that come along with the job of sound mixer/boom op.

We are going to frame this presentation around using the equipment you’ve been issued, as well as offering tips and hacks to effectively grow your audio skills and capabilities.

Topics to be covered…

• The tools of the trade (shotgun mic, mount, pole, wind protection, cables, headphones, and more)

• Get that mic off the camera and in front of the talent! Where to position the mic.

• How to make a boom pole with a walking stick, gaff tape, and a long XLR cable

• What is a “Frame Line”?

• FS5 Audio setup

• Mic/Line level and phantom power

• Proper recording levels

• Wireless systems and lavalier mics

• Critical Listening: Location audio contaminants such as traffic, music, airplane, background talking, air conditioning, refrigeration, wind noise, and much more.

You are invited to a Zoom meeting.
