HOF14: Networking Best Practices
The Media Communications Program undoubtedly has the best and most talented individuals at Full Sail University. Despite this being a completely factual and unbiased statement, I hear time and time again that media communications students do not see themselves represented on campus. I cannot count how often I have told students from outside MCBS about the program to be met with “What is that?” or “So what do y'all do?” My response is typically “everything.”
But regardless of us being the best and being masters at everything, it is a small and new-ish program, and we do not get a lot of attention on campus. We don’t even have program stickers in the Hangr (I checked). Because of this, it is easy for us to feel disconnected from the rest of campus. That is why Hall of Fame is such an important opportunity for us. It allows us to network with other students and alums and show them who we are. The attending alumni serve as a living testament to success in the industries we, MCBS students, dream about. The greater presence Media Communications establishes, the more it enhances our visibility and representation on campus.
So, it's crucial that we hit the ground running this week, actively networking and putting ourselves out there.
But if you’re anything like me and you find networking highly anxiety inducing. Here are some of the best practices I’ve picked up in classes, blend, and from the MCBS alumni mixer that have helped me ease those nerves:
Always carry your business card and/or have your portfolio readily available
Focus on building relationships, rather than pursuing job opportunities or collaborations.
Approach all individuals with respect and consideration.
Be clear and confident in communicating your value.
Let’s get out there MCBS!
